2001 Quad County Wrap-Up!

The Inaugural Quad County Metric was a resounding success, with 800 riders (the best ever for a spring ride, and second-best ever for all SCU rides) enjoying glorious weather, a scenic route, and food that raised the bar for SCU's legendary standards.

Rider Feedback

"You couldn't ask for a better backdrop than Green Lane; just pulling in Sunday morning going over that old iron bridge and looking around and it was gorgeous. I knew right then it was going to be a beautiful ride! It was the most scenic ride I've done yet! Excellent job all the way around. Everything was great!"

"One of the most enjoyable rides I have ever been on.  The food was typical SCU top drawer (other clubs who read this take a hint, I'd like something more for my $15 than cold bagels and leftover fruit at the end of the ride), and the route was superb.  A quantum leap up from the Mexican Metric.  Everyone's hard work has produced an instant classic."

"The ride was wonderful!! First class everything. Gorgeous route, incredible food, flawless organization. I'm truly amazed that a bunch of volunteers can produce such a "professionally" organized event. Much, much better than the Mexican. Congratulations!!"

Ride Profile/Map

Thanks to Bill Cotton, we have a full profile of the ride. As expected, the first 20 miles are mostly uphill (especially the first six), the middle section rolls and levels out, and the final third of the ride allows a whole lotta coastin'. The total altitude gain is around 3800 feet (57 feet per mile) -- less than the Mexican, Icicle and Poker rides.

Bill also provided this map of the entire route:

Get Well's

To Al Herman, whose pinky finger was cut to the bone unloading the food truck, but still got back before the end of the ride. Such a mensch!

To Steve Murphy, who hit a hole and broke his collarbone. Abundant thanks to Ed Hein for attending to him until Andrea caught up with a SAG wagon.

Thank You's

Dave Atkins thanks his rest stop crews: Joanne, Jody, Doreen, Jeanne, Linda, and Shelly at the girls' stop (Lenape Park); Barbara, Pat & Bill, Doug, and Pat's friend (sorry, her name escapes me) at Lake Towhee; and the intrepid "no -bathroom" group at Ward and Knight Rds. on the 25 route, Janice, Jay, and Adam.

Terry Strobaugh thanks the SAGs and sweeps: Andrea C. (for Bikeworks) and Jason who rode with her; Mike K. and Roger who helped him; George K. and his friend Jeanne; Dave B. and Joanne who rode with him and also helped out several crash victims with her nursing skills; Bikeworks' Jeff who SAG'd from his motorcycle; Eric F. who SAG'd and swept the 42 from his motorcycle; Ride Marshal's Ed H., Chris B., Karen H., Jack E.  He would especially like to thank our two sponsor shops: Bikeworks, who provided the start safety check and repairs, and Keswick, who was at Lenape for the 42 and 65 mile repairs. Also, Dave A. who provided ad hoc sweep from Lake Towhee for the finale.

Linda Mueller thanks the Bar-B-Q chicken crew: injured Fearless Leader Al, Elliot, Sharon and her daughter, and everyone else who cooked and chopped.

Michelle McCoach thanks her registration mavens: Jack Elias, Janice, Cindy Unangst, Chris Davis, and Ed Sawin.  Special thanks to Joe U. for watching the kids so the others could concentrate on putting those meal bracelets on the riders!  Also, thanks to Ed Sawin for supplying us with the pre-reg list.

Leigh Weber appreciates his parking crew: Erick & Kathy Allen, Ben Cass, Dick Fleming, Rob Young, Rob Esposito, Craig Ramsey, Tom Lyons, Chris Beetham for directing cyclists as car drivers, and to the Muellers & Katz families for lending us their walkie talkies.

Pat Rock thanks the legendary SCU bakers, who once again set the standard for home-baked goodness. Kudos to all!
