Presidents Message
Samer March 2
I’m writing this message as we approach the beginning of March only to see another layer of fresh snow blanket the roads again. But spring is well and truly on its way. While the temperatures and cold air are not indicative, there is a hint of spring approaching soon as the days are getting longer. Yes, soon we will all spring our way to warm outdoor rides that start and end in daylight. As it’s been the tradition, one excellent way to prepare for the spring and commit to outdoor riding is to preregister for the Quad County ride, SCU’s signature ride. The registration for the Quad is now open (register here)! The Quad will be held on Saturday May 18th, taking you through a beautiful terrain starting from Green Lane Park in Montgomery and winding through Berks, Lehigh, and Bucks counties. This year we are offering a nice insulated Polar water bottle decorated with our iconic Quad logo in blue and yellow. You must register by April 14th to claim this gift. Even better, if you register by March 4th, you will receive both the bottle and a discount for registering early! For those who haven’t experienced the Quad, one of the main reasons why this ride stands out from other rides in our area is: 1) You will experience some of the best lightly traveled scenic roads with routes that take you through four of the oldest counties in PA! 2) Our rest stops are famous for being well stocked offering fresh fruits, snacks, trail mix and delicious home baked goods 3) The ride brings you back to Green Lane Park, one of the hidden gems in Montco, for a free lunch suiting the appetite of all.

Finally, a big shout out goes to the Quad volunteers/committee for devoting their time and efforts!

Ride!

Quad Bottle 2019
The 2019 Quad Incentive has Arrived

In case you haven’t heard, this year’s Quad incentive is an insulated Polar water bottle with the Quad logo in SCU colors of blue and yellow. Polar water bottles are double-walled with a foil heat reflector in between. After ordinary water bottles have turned their contents to bath water (yuk!), the water in your Polar water bottle will be cool and refreshing (ahh!).
So how do you get one? There are only three ways you can get an official 2019 Quad Water Bottle:

   1. Ride the Quad!
   2. Volunteer for the Quad!
   3. Bake for the Quad!

Don’t delay – you must register for the Quad by April 14 in order to qualify for the incentive, and discounted early registration ends on March 4.

More details at the SCU website www.suburbancyclists.org or jump directly to Quad registration via www.ridethequad.com. The same web page has a link for volunteering/baking. The sample shown is 24 ounce, but 20 ounce sizes will be available to fit smaller bike frames.

“Gear Up for Spring” Seminar

All are welcome!  BCP is pleased to host this event for our cycling family, to help make our return to early spring bike rides more enjoyable, comfortable, and energy-efficient.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 27, 6:30 to 9:00pm.  “Happy Hour” starts at 6:30, program starts at 7:00.
WHERE: Giant Bicycles/Village Velo of Bridgeport, 3 Dekalb St, Bridgeport, PA 19405
WEBSITE for the venue: http://www.giantbridgeport.com/us

This bike shop is directly across the Schuylkill River from Norristown.  By bike, it is accessible via the SRT.  By car, it is accessible via I-76, PA-23, US-202, and Ridge Pk/Main St in Norristown.  PUBLIC TRANSIT access includes the Manayunk train line, which stops at the Norristown Transportation Center, directly across the river.  The SEPTA 99 bus runs along Dekalb St, and stops in front of the shop.

Physical therapists Kira Sender & Greg Kowal (both are DPTs) will present “spring training” exercises, to
• maximize physical fitness and stamina, and minimize fatigue
• prevent pain and injuries
• maximize the JOY & FUN of returning to early spring riding, after the winter hiatus

A bike mechanic will present spring cleaning & tune-up essentials for our bikes, to
• Optimize performance and energy-efficiency
• Optimize comfort for longer rides
Our bike mechanic will also explain how certain clothing accessories can be helpful during the fickle weather of early spring, when it’s cool in the morning, but warm in the afternoon.

REFRESHMENTS will be served.  There will be time for socializing and refreshments from 6:30 to ~7:00.  There will be a brief intermission for refreshments between the presentations.

PARKING: There is a large, free, off-street parking lot next to the shop entrance, on DeKalb St.

VOLUNTEERS are NEEDED to help with set-up (5:45pm) and with clean-up at the end of the program.  If you are able to volunteer, THANK YOU!  Please contact Linda McGrane, at mcgrane_linda_a@yahoo.com, or, 267-251-7862

We hope to see you at “Gear Up for Spring” on March 27!
