Neighborhood Bike Works is a youth development organization in West Philadelphia serving neighborhood youth from 8 to 18. Since 1996, NBW has offered classes on bike repair. By completing a series of classes and fixing up used bikes donated by the community, students can earn a bike for themselves. NBW welcomes donations of used bikes. (Added 9/24/06) - 

The New Jersey Bike Map is an excellent resource for riding in NJ. "The information on these maps is the result of 27 years of cycling experience in the area. I have up to this time, have traveled about 60% of the state by bicycle. As I ride, I take notes of road names, dirt roads, where parks, schools, and food stops are. The SAFE KIDS Coalition of Southeastern Pennsylvania was formed in 1988 as part of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign and covers Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties.  The Safe Kids Coalition donates bicycle helmets to children. (Added 9/24/06)

Wheelmen - a national, non-profit organization dedicated to keeping alive the heritage of American cycling, promoting the restoration and riding of early cycles (1918 or earlier), and encouraging cycling as part of modern living. The Wheelmen Annual Meet includes an antique bicycle parade with formation riding.

World Bicycle Relief was founded in 2005 by SRAM Corporation and Trek Bicycle in response to the December 2004 tsunami that swept the Indian Ocean. This project provided more than 24,000 locally manufactured bicycles to people in greatest need. World Bicycle Relief partnered with a coalition of relief organizations to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in Zambia. Project Zambia will provide 23,000 bicycles to community home-based care volunteers, disease prevention educators and vulnerable households. (Added 12/13/07)

AllSport GPS tracks workouts—runs, bike rides, walks and more—on maps. This fitness app collects 25 stats, including time, pace, distance, and calories burned. iPhone, Android, and Blackberry versions are available. (added 5/17/11)

DeLorme TopoUSA - mapping software with elevation profiles. Files can be exported to GPS. GPX files can be imported into TopoUSA to get elevation profiles. Create cue sheets from TopoUSA using SAD2CUE or CueSheetMaker.

Greater Philadelphia Regional Bike Map - Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (added 12/14/08)

iMapMy is a fitness tracking application that enables you to use the built-in GPS of your mobile device to track all of your fitness activities. Works with MapMyRide. iPhone, Android, and Blackberry versions are available. (added 5/17/11)

The New Jersey Bike Map is a detailed set of PDF maps of NJ and most of Bucks, and parts of Montgomery, Lehigh, and Northampton counties in Pennsylvania. The maps highlight the bicycle friendly roads and indicate food stores, parks, hills, etc. These maps are intended for printing, not for GPS routing.

PhillyMap - Interactive map for getting around Philadelphia by bicycle and transit (added 10/23/10)

Online Route Mapping

Even if you do not ride with a GPS, the bicycle route-mapping websites can provide cue sheets and distance/elevation data. Import a GPX file from your riding buddy's GPS to show the route on a map.

GooglyCue is a web based application that will translate a route drawn in Google Maps into a PDF cue sheet, or into a file suitable for downloading to a hand held device. (added 7/13/11)

MapMyRide - online route mapping with elevation data. MapMyRide now provides automatic hill rating. For any climb to be rated (receive a climb score/category) it must be at least 500 meters (0.31 miles) in length with an average grade of 3% or more. (updated 9/26/11)

GPS Utilities

GarminConnect - a free site that supports direct uploading of data from the newer Garmin products. Users of older Garmin GPS's can use GarminConnect by uploading GPX files. GarminConnect can generate reports (distance, ave. speed, elevation gain, etc.) for weekly, monthly, and yearly time periods. (Added 12/29/11)

GMapToGPX - Convert Google Maps to GPX. (added 1/01/10)

GPSBabel - converts waypoints, tracks, and routes between popular GPS receivers and mapping programs. It also has powerful manipulation tools for such data. (added 10/23/10)

GPS Visualizer - a free, easy-to-use online utility that creates maps and profiles from GPS data (tracks and waypoints, including GPX files), driving routes, street addresses, or simple coordinates. (added 10/23/10)

Mileage Logs

PDF and XLS Format Downloadable Files

NOTE: XLS files are Microsoft Excel format and may provide automatic summation and charting of weekly, monthly, and/or yearly data, as noted in the description. You must own Microsoft Excel, or an equivalent program, to use any of the XLS-format logs. PDF files require Adobe Acrobat Reader or other PDF reader. The PDF files are intended for manual entry of mileage; i.e., print the file once and log the data with pen or pencil. All mileage logs are free except as noted below.

If the selected file does not open in your browser window, download the file to your computer. Click on the link with the RIGHT mouse button, then click "Save Target As..." in Microsoft Internet Explorer or "Save Link As..." in Mozilla Firefox or Netscape Navigator, and then specify a location where you want to save the file on your hard drive.

Suburban Cyclists Unlimited 2012 logs: PDF or XLS with entire year on one page in landscape orientation. XLS version provides automatic summation of weekly, monthly, and yearly totals, and charts for mileage per week and mileage per month. First day of week = Sunday. Bicycle Mileage Log Programs

These are stand-alone Windows applications available for download and installation on your computer. With these programs, you own your data and there is no uploading to a website. Free limited-time trial versions may be available, as noted in the descriptions. Listed in alphabetical order.

CrossTrak Multi-sport Training Log, Premium Edition ($39.95 US). Provides 100 custom charts and graphs. Accommodates multiple sports and multiple users. (Updated 12/25/07)

CycliStats Ride Logger and Training Diary. User-friendly software tracks your rides, bicycle maintenance, and health. 30-day free trial version. $49.95 to buy. Shasta Software. (Added 6/14/03, updated 12/18/05)

SportTracks is a mileage log program that uploads mileage directly from your GPS and can display your route map along with elevation and other data your GPS collects. SportTracks received a very favorable review from RoadBikeRider.com (newsletter No. 419 - 11/19/09). Free trial version or $35 for full-featured Version 3. (Updated 1/16/11)

Ye Olde Bicycle Log is a free program with separate logs for road rides and off-road rides, and indoor training. You select what you want to log; e.g. heart rate, climbing, power, cadence, etc. (Added 7/28/11)

Online Logs

These online applications allow the user to access the log from any computer with an Internet connection.

BikeJournal is an online log that allows the user to share and compare statistics with other riders. Features include a local weather report link, ability to graph your rides' stats, a member's forum for biking questions and comments, maps to local trails, biking links, and numerous stat comparison tables. Free, but registration is required. (Added 4/19/03)

BikeTracker.com online log. Access your log on the Internet from any computer. $25.00 per year. (Added 1/13/03)

GarminConnect is a free site that supports direct uploading of data from the newer Garmin products. Users of older Garmin GPS's can use GarminConnect by uploading GPX files. GarminConnect can generate reports (distance, ave. speed, elevation gain, etc.) for weekly, monthly, and yearly time periods. (Added 12/29/11)

My Cycling Log is a free online diary for recording your rides. The goal of My Cycling Log is to make this process quick, clean, and easy. My Cycling Log also supports teams and groups. When you join a group you can quickly compare recent rides and contribute to the group's overall statistics. (Added 1/06/11)

Strava allows users to compare GPS ride data with previous rides, and other riders. 2011 Velo award winner. (added 12/23/11)

VeloD Social Cycling Diary is an online training diary that provides graphing, bike maintenance, summary, etc. Share rides and events. (Added 12/14/08)

WinningStats.com is a web site for athletes and coaches to monitor individual and/or team fitness routines. Membership is free - there are no fees, payments or trial periods. WinningStats.com is supported through advertisers and partners. (Added 4/29/03)
